In a decisive move, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry has blocked 18 OTT platforms and associated social media accounts nationwide, citing violations of the Information Technology Act and other relevant statutes. Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur reiterated the responsibility of platforms to refrain from disseminating obscene and vulgar content disguised as ‘creative expression’.
The blocked platforms, including Dreams Films, Voovi, and Uncut Adda, were found to host content portraying women in a demeaning manner, featuring nudity, sexual acts, and explicit scenes devoid of societal relevance. One platform recorded over 1 crore downloads, highlighting the significant reach of such content. The ministry’s action underscores the government’s commitment to regulating digital content and safeguarding societal values.
