Hungary Assumes EU Presidency Amid Controversy and Criticism

Hungary has taken over the European Union’s rotating presidency amidst significant controversy and skepticism from critics within the bloc. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government, known for its nationalist and authoritarian tendencies, faces scrutiny over its commitment to democratic values and human rights. Despite assurances of being an “honest broker,” Hungary’s presidency is overshadowed by concerns regarding its close ties with Russia and its stance on issues like the rule of law and migration.

Orban’s slogan for the presidency, “Make Europe Great Again,” echoing Donald Trump’s rhetoric, has already stirred unease in Brussels, where Hungary’s previous presidency in 2011 was marked by confrontations with European Parliament. As Hungary sets out its agenda, including priorities like handling illegal migration and advancing Western Balkans’ EU accession, its ability to influence EU policy remains constrained by its isolated position within the European Parliament and ongoing disputes with EU institutions over fundamental rights and financial matters.
