Following the dissolution of the government by Guinea’s junta accounts belonging to government members have been frozen, and their passports seized. The military, which seized power in a September 2021 coup, decreed the dissolution of the government without specifying reasons. Chief of Staff General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura announced the freeze on state television, alongside around 20 soldiers.
Despite the lack of public explanation, the junta has emphasized its anti-corruption agenda, echoing similar moves by other West African regimes in recent years. Tensions within the government have been reported, culminating in a rare protest in the capital, Conakry. The junta’s restrictions on demonstrations and media freedom, along with internet shutdowns, have drawn international criticism. Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, the junta leader, has pledged to return power to civilians by the end of 2024, aiming for comprehensive reforms in the impoverished nation.
