Greater Chennai Corporation’s Strategy to Manage Community Dogs

In response to escalating complaints of dog bites and the presence of rabid animals in Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is contemplating a comprehensive policy for the management of community dogs. Discussions with the State Planning Commission have commenced to address this pressing issue. The proposed policy aims to alleviate civic concerns while also reinforcing regulations concerning the trade of pets and the breeding of exotic dogs.

Residents, voicing their grievances during area sabha meetings, have emphasized the urgency of resolving issues related to community dogs, urging the GCC to explore solutions. Despite previous proposals for special enclosures to feed community dogs, implementation has been hindered by NGO protests. Presently, the GCC is actively engaged in capturing community dogs for birth control measures and vaccination to curb their population and mitigate the risk of rabies transmission.
