Greater Chennai Corporation Tackles Unauthorized Dump Sites Near Railway Stations
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated a major cleanup of unauthorized dump sites near railway stations, particularly around the Perungudi MRTS station. This effort follows complaints from residents about persistent illegal dumping of construction debris, garbage, and hazardous waste along the service road and railway land. Since July 22, GCC has deployed over 100 laborers and various machinery to clear 250 metric tonnes of waste, with over 1000 tonnes still to be removed.
In addition to debris removal, GCC is installing CCTV cameras, gantries, and proposing fencing to prevent future dumping. Collaborating with Southern Railways, GCC aims to enhance the maintenance and monitoring of these areas to safeguard public health and ensure cleaner surroundings.
