The Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated a drive to curb the use of banned plastics in the city. During the drive, civic officials discovered 448 traders who were defying the ban on plastics. They conducted raids on 1,260 commercial entities and seized three tonnes of plastics from a godown in Padi.
Additionally, a fine of ₹1 lakh was imposed on the establishment. The Corporation’s efforts aim to prevent plastic pollution and enforce strict measures against violators. In line with this, the National Green Tribunal formed a Joint Committee to inspect the presence of microplastics in wells near dumpsites in Chennai, based on a CAG report. Multiple research studies have confirmed the presence of microplastics in groundwater in the city.
