Greater Chennai Corporation Aims to Eliminate Dumping of Waste by 2030 Through People’s Movement

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan has announced plans to initiate a people’s movement to put an end to the dumping of waste at the city’s major dump yards by 2030. Speaking at an event organized by The Theosophical Society, Radhakrishnan highlighted the need for waste segregation, processing, and adoption of innovative waste management practices.

He noted that while the city’s waste generation has risen from 2,500 tonnes per day in 2001 to 6,150 tonnes per day, only 1,800 tonnes are currently processed. The commissioner emphasized the importance of making waste management a collective effort and predicted that by 2030, over 90% of waste generated will be processed, leaving less than 10% to be sent to dump yards.
