The Indian government has announced plans to streamline the certification process for food products by requiring only one certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Certifications from other bodies like the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and AGMARK will no longer be necessary if these proposed amendments are finalized.
Health Ministry officials stated that this move aims to promote ease of doing business and create a unified regulatory framework under the concept of ‘One Nation, One Commodity, One Regulator’. The decision was made during the 43rd meeting of the FSSAI chaired by Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra, where various amendments to food safety and standards regulations were approved.
Once finalized, food businesses will only need to obtain FSSAI certification, eliminating the need to approach multiple authorities for mandatory certification. Additionally, the meeting approved revisions to standards for Mead (Honey wine), Alcoholic Ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, and Haleem, among others.
A comprehensive manual of analysis methods was also endorsed to ensure regulatory compliance of food products. This decision marks a significant step towards simplifying regulatory processes in the food industry and fostering a conducive business environment in India.
