Government Issues Warning About Online Booking Scams Pretending to Offer Pilgrim Services
The central government has warned people about a rise in online scams that pretend to offer booking services for pilgrimages. These fake websites and mobile apps trick people by looking like official platforms for popular religious trips such as Char Dham Yatra, Vaishno Devi, Tirupati, and others.
Officials said scammers are targeting people who want to book travel, accommodation, and darshan (temple visit) passes for these holy places. They create websites that look real and ask people to pay money online. Once people pay, the scammers disappear and do not provide any service.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued this alert after receiving several complaints from victims across the country. Many people lost their money after trusting these fake platforms. In some cases, the scammers also stole personal information like phone numbers, ID proof, and bank details.
The government has advised all pilgrims to book services only through official websites or trusted travel agents. Officials have also asked state authorities to increase awareness among travelers and temple authorities to guide visitors properly.
Cybersecurity experts are helping track down these scammers. The government has also asked social media platforms and search engines to remove fake ads and links. People should stay alert and always double-check a website’s web address before making any payments.
To stay safe, the government shared a few simple tips:
-
Always use official websites for bookings.
-
Avoid clicking on unknown links sent by text or email.
-
Do not share personal or bank details with unverified sources.
-
Report suspicious websites or messages to cybercrime helplines.
The Ministry has set up a helpline number (1930) and a website (cybercrime.gov.in) where people can report such scams quickly. Officials are working hard to find and stop these online frauds.
With more people booking religious trips online, the government wants to protect pilgrims and ensure a safe and peaceful journey for everyone.
