In a move to address the escalating traffic congestion along the East Coast Road (ECR) from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi, the State government has sanctioned ₹52 lakh for a techno-economic feasibility study for an elevated corridor. This decision aligns with Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu’s proposal in the State Budget 2024-25 to explore constructing a four-lane elevated corridor.
Given the limited right of way and extensive urbanization along the ECR stretch under the Greater Chennai Corporation, widening the road has become challenging and met with legal objections from residents. The upcoming study will involve data collection and alignment planning, crucial for understanding property ownership along the corridor.
Meanwhile, the Highways Department is already in the process of acquiring lands for an elevated corridor between Thiruvanmiyur and RTO signals, with provisions made for significant landmarks like the Valmiki temple and the Marundeeswarar temple.
