Gelephu Mega-Project and Economic Revival Dominate Bhutan Elections Discourse
Ahead of the January 9 elections in Bhutan, the proposed Gelephu mega-city project and the imperative to revive the economy are central themes for both prime ministerial contenders. The Gelephu project, announced by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, is viewed as a significant responsibility, aiming to create an economic hub on Bhutan’s southern border with Assam.
Both former Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and former civil servant Pema Chewang see the project as crucial for generating employment and reversing the trend of youth migration. Economic challenges, exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19, have led to increased out-migration. The Gelephu project is envisioned to address these issues, focusing on renewable energy, connectivity, and youth skilling, while adhering to environmental goals.
