In honor of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated a campaign for cleaner air in the city. Additional Commissioner (Health) Shankar Lal Kumawat inaugurated a rally that symbolized the commitment to achieving cleaner air for a healthier future. As part of this effort, the GCC will introduce various projects aimed at improving air quality, including an on-street parking management system, non-motorized transport options, and mechanized cleaning of polluted roads and cycle tracks.
However, Pasumai Thaayagam president Sowmiya Anbumani expressed concerns about the GCC’s waste incineration and waste-to-energy projects, suggesting that they could lead to air pollution and health risks. She also called for the shelving of multi-level car parking projects in the city and the implementation of the Chennai Action Plan for Control of Air Pollution 2021, emphasizing the importance of strengthening public transport to reduce traffic congestion.
