Funding Shortage Halts Proposed Chennai Metro Rail Airport-Kilambakkam Project

The proposed extension of the Chennai Metro Rail line from the airport to Kilambakkam is facing delays due to a lack of funds from the central government. The detailed project report for the extension, estimated at ₹4,080 crore, was submitted by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) last year.

However, there has been no response or funding commitment from the central government. With Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase 2 project also facing financial constraints, it is unlikely that the Airport-Kilambakkam project will proceed anytime soon. The Phase 2 project is estimated at ₹61,843 crore and is under construction, with funds primarily provided by the state government and loans from international banks.
