Francis Scott Key Bridge Span Demolished in Baltimore
Crews in Baltimore set off a chain of explosives to demolish the largest remaining span of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. With a boom and a splash, the mangled steel trusses crashed down into the river below. The controlled demolition is a significant step in freeing the Dali container ship, which has been stuck among the wreckage since March.
This demolition will allow the Dali to be refloated, restoring traffic through the port and providing relief for thousands of impacted workers. Officials expect to refloat the ship within the next few days, followed by temporary repairs before moving it to a shipyard for further repairs. The operation remains on track to reopen the port’s deep draft channel by the end of May.
