France to Withdraw Ambassador and End Military Cooperation with Niger Amid Coup

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the withdrawal of France’s ambassador from Niger and the end of all military cooperation with the West African nation in response to the military coup that took place in July. Macron also stated that French troops would leave Niger in the coming months. Currently, there are about 1,500 French soldiers stationed in Niger.

Macron reaffirmed his support for ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who is being held by the coup leaders, describing him as the “sole legitimate authority” in the country. The military junta in Niger welcomed Macron’s decision, viewing it as a step toward the country’s sovereignty.
