Farmer Commits Suicide Due to Crop Failure in Karnataka
A distressed farmer, identified as Sathish (49), residing in Giriyapura of Kadur taluk, Karnataka, died by suicide as his onion crops on two acres of land failed due to the adverse impact of monsoon failure and drought-like conditions. Sathish had borrowed money to invest in his crops, and the complete loss incurred due to the crop failure left him unable to cope.
Unable to bear the financial burden and emotional distress, he took his own life by hanging himself on his farm. Police authorities, including the Ajjampura police, have initiated an investigation and registered a case. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has indicated that a cabinet sub-committee on drought will soon submit its report, following which the state would seek central assistance for drought-affected regions.
The declaration of drought-hit taluks will precede financial aid requests and a central team’s visit to assess the situation on the ground.
