Farmer Attempts Suicide During Central Team’s Visit to Assess Drought in Karnataka
A farmer in Karnataka’s Belagavi district attempted suicide by consuming pesticide during a visit by a central team tasked with assessing the drought situation in the state. The farmer, Appasaheb Lakkundi, expressed his distress over the destruction of his 40-acre crop due to drought and the lack of government support for farmers.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier discussed the drought situation with the Interministerial Central Team and urged them to take prompt measures to assist the state’s farmers. The state government is seeking a relief package of Rs 6,000 crore from the central government to address the crisis brought about by delayed monsoons and insufficient rainfall.
