Extreme Weather Grips Nordic Nations and Western Europe
Extreme weather conditions have gripped both the Nordic nations and Western Europe, causing a range of disruptions. In the Nordic region, Sweden experienced its coldest January temperatures in 25 years, with the city of Kvikkjokk recording minus 43.6 degrees Celsius. The extreme cold grounded flights, disrupted bus routes, and left thousands of households without electricity.
Denmark witnessed its deepest snow coverage in 13 years, coupled with heavy rainfall, causing significant traffic disruptions. Finland recorded its lowest winter temperature at minus 42.1 degrees Celsius. In Western Europe, flooding due to heavy precipitation has affected parts of France, Germany, Belgium, and the UK.
French firefighters rescued 59 people from floods, while Germany faced disruption and fatalities due to persistent rainfall. The UK, post-Storm Henk, dealt with transport chaos, power cuts, and flood warnings, with thousands of homes left without electricity. The situation has prompted emergency responses, evacuations, and concerns about the long-term impact on affected regions.
