Extension Granted for Kannada Signage Implementation
The Karnataka government has granted a two-week extension for the installation of signage boards featuring 60% Kannada in commercial establishments, shifting the previous deadline from February 28. Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar emphasized the necessity of allowing additional time for the transition, recognizing the logistical challenges involved in altering signage.
The decision follows the government’s mandate, outlined in a gazette notification on February 26, requiring the predominant use of Kannada in commercial signage. With the extension, businesses have been afforded temporary relief, while the government underscores the importance of upholding the prominence of the mother tongue.
Mr. Shivakumar reiterated the expectation of full compliance within the extended timeframe, emphasizing respect for the Kannada language and the enforcement of regulatory measures to ensure adherence to the new signage guidelines.
