Expanding Water Conservation Efforts in Palar’s Tributaries
The Water Resources Department is advancing plans to construct additional minor check-dams across the tributaries of the Palar River, targeting regions with critical groundwater depletion. Inspired by the successful implementation of check-dams in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, these new structures aim to enhance water storage and groundwater recharge.
Recent projects near Vanniyanallur village and Sempoondi have significantly improved agricultural productivity and drinking water availability. The Vanniyanallur check dam alone supports 212 hectares of farmland, while the Sempoondi dam benefits 90 hectares and several villages. Officials emphasize these dams’ rapid construction and long-term benefits, highlighting their positive impact on local farmers’ livelihoods and water security.
