Escalating Violence in Haiti Endangers Women and Children, UNICEF Reports

UNICEF has expressed grave concern over the increasing violence in Haiti, particularly affecting women and children. Alarming reports reveal a sharp rise in kidnappings, with nearly 300 cases confirmed in the first half of 2023 alone, almost matching the entire count of the previous year and nearly three times higher than in 2021.

Armed groups forcibly abduct children and women, exploiting them for financial or tactical purposes. Survivors returning home carry enduring physical and psychological scars. The situation in Haiti is dire, with about 5.2 million people, almost half of the population, requiring humanitarian aid.

Both the people of Haiti and aid workers are affected by the escalating violence. Local healthcare and education systems are on the brink of collapse, adding to the ongoing crisis.
