Ennore Villagers Demand Permanent Closure of Fertilizer Plant
More than 300 residents of Ennore launched a signature campaign demanding the permanent closure of Coromandel International Limited (CIL), a fertilizer unit in the area. The campaign, initiated to mark the 125th day of protest against the unit following an ammonia gas leak in December 2023, aims to address their safety concerns.
According to a technical committee investigating the leak, 67.638 tonnes of gas leaked from CIL’s undersea pipeline. Residents fear living near the plant, especially with its double-insulated ammonium storage tank, and cite decades of regular noxious fumes release causing health problems. They stress that a more intense leak could have fatal consequences for the surrounding villages and are adamant about the plant’s permanent closure.
