Ennore Oil Spill Unlikely to Affect Olive Ridley Turtles, Say Officials
Officials from the Forest Department in Chennai have indicated that the recent oil spill in Ennore, following Cyclone Michaung, is unlikely to have adverse effects on Olive Ridley turtles. The spillage mainly occurred in the Ennore estuary, and as the oil did not spread significantly into the sea, the impact on turtles is expected to be minimal.
The Ennore coast has groynes, and Olive Ridley turtles usually nest on sandy beaches. The annual nesting season for Olive Ridley turtles along the Chennai coast is set to begin in January. A task force has been formed to inspect the areas affected by the spill and report on any adverse impacts on turtle nesting areas. The report is expected to be submitted soon, providing a comprehensive assessment of the situation.
