Engineering Marvel: Chennai Metro Rail’s Tallest Pillar Under Construction
Amidst bustling traffic and existing metro corridors, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is constructing its tallest pillar at Kathipara Junction for phase II of its network. Standing at an impressive 108 feet, this pillar is part of corridor 5, covering 44.6 km from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. Utilizing the Balanced Cantilever method, CMRL navigates challenges posed by heavy traffic and limited ground space.
Special engineering designs accommodate the sharpest curve between Butt Road and Alandur. With extreme caution, L&T, the contractor, ensures safety and minimal inconvenience to the public during construction. The foundation, with a diameter of 1.5 meters and 12 piles, is designed to withstand heavy loads. As work progresses steadily, CMRL aims to complete this remarkable feat in the coming years, enhancing Chennai’s metro infrastructure with innovation and precision.
