Massive electricity infrastructure upgrades are in progress in north Chennai, with further plans in the pipeline. Tangedco (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) has submitted a proposal to the government to shift overhead power cables underground, covering a length of 1,300 km in Tondiarpet and Vyasarpadi at a cost of ₹635 crores, funded by the German bank KfW.
The improvements aim to address inadequate electricity infrastructure in north Chennai compared to southern areas. Tangedco is installing new ring main units (RMUs), converting old distribution transformers to RMUs, commissioning new substations, and shifting overhead cables underground. These efforts have been executed under the North Chennai Valarchi Thittam initiative, with various localities benefiting from improved electricity distribution networks.
