Kolkata Police arrested an elderly couple, Chunni Das and Alka Sardar, for attempting to sell their 23-day-old granddaughter to a local agent. The arrest came after a complaint filed by the newborn’s mother, 19-year-old Nilam Kumari. The police rescued the newborn and provided the necessary medical care. In her complaint, Kumari revealed that Chunni was her biological father, and Alka was her stepmother.
The couple admitted to selling their granddaughter for Rs 30,000 to a child trafficking agent during the police interrogation. Cases have been registered against them under Section 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. This incident follows a child-selling racket bust in August involving over 100 agents and sub-agents operating through an IVF center in the same area.
