The redevelopment of Chennai Egmore railway station, the city’s second-largest terminal, is swiftly advancing with significant civil works underway to construct the main terminal and associated structures. CPRO of Southern Railway, B. Guganesan, reported that the project, initiated in October 2022, is making substantial progress.
Pile foundation work for multi-level car parking along Gandhi Irwin Road is fully completed, while 85% of the work on the Poonamalle High Road side is finished. Plans for the new arrival terminal are being finalized, with ongoing demolition of existing structures including the parcel office. Coordination with various stakeholders such as Metro Rail, Greater Chennai Corporation, and City Traffic Police is ensuring the smooth execution of the project.
Spearheaded by DEC Infrastructure and Projects India and overseen by Tata Consulting Engineers, the ₹734.91 crore project envisions a ground plus three-story main terminal building and multi-level car parking structures on both sides, aiming for completion within three years.
