In the aftermath of the oil spill in Ennore, joint operations by the State government and the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) have successfully removed 2.2 lakh litres of oily water and 663 tonnes of sludge from the Kosasthalaiyar river. The cleanup operations covered four stretches along the river, with significant progress achieved from Ennore Creek mouth to Sathyamurthy Nagar.
Work is still ongoing in the land areas near Sathyamurthy Nagar bridge and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority’s steel yard area in Manali. Additionally, sludge removal efforts are underway on the shores of wetlands and mangroves. Fishermen have been actively engaged in oil response operations.
Since December 12, 2023, a total of 2,20,040 litres of oily water and 663.5 tonnes of sludge have been successfully removed and sent for further treatment and disposal. Despite these efforts, tar balls have washed ashore near Pulicat, prompting locals to connect them to the oil spill.
