EAM Jaishankar’s Diplomatic Foray in Sri Lanka: Unveiling Projects and Strengthening Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar embarked on his inaugural visit to Sri Lanka in his second consecutive term, signaling India’s unwavering commitment to bolstering bilateral relations with its maritime neighbor. Upon arrival in Colombo, Jaishankar was warmly received by State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya and Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman. The visit underscores India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and SAGAR policies, emphasizing mutual cooperation and development initiatives in the Indian Ocean region.

A highlight of the visit was the joint inauguration with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, funded by a $6 million Indian grant, aimed at enhancing maritime safety and coordination. Additionally, Jaishankar and Wickremesinghe inaugurated 106 houses under the Indian Housing Project, further cementing ties through tangible development efforts in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Matale. The visit is set to accelerate connectivity projects and deepen cooperation across various sectors, reaffirming India’s strategic partnership and friendship with Sri Lanka.
