Driver Sentenced for Fatal Road Accident in Chennai
In Chennai, a 36-year-old man, Abdul Qayyum, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for causing the death of a 21-year-old woman, A. Yamuna, in a road accident two years ago. The man was convicted of driving his luxury car recklessly and colliding with Yamuna’s two-wheeler at the EVR Periyar Salai-Barnaby Road junction in Kilpauk.
Yamuna, an ECG staff member involved in the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, succumbed to her injuries at a government hospital. After the collision, Qayyum attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by passers-by about a kilometer away.
The Mahila Court at Periyamedu, Allikulam, pronounced the judgment, charging Qayyum with rash and negligent driving, along with endangering the safety of others. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on the convicted driver.
