The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has revealed that over the past four years, approximately 1.7 crore telecom connections have been disconnected due to inputs from various sources, including the Sanchar Saathi portal and inputs from law enforcement agencies. This initiative aims to combat fraudulent mobile connections, particularly related to call center scams.
Furthermore, DoT’s collaboration with WhatsApp has resulted in the blocking of over six lakh phone numbers associated with fraudulent activities. Additionally, banks and mobile wallet providers have taken action against nearly 10 lakh accounts linked to such numbers. Despite these measures, challenges persist as spamming activities have transitioned from telecom networks to third-party services like WhatsApp, prompting further strategies for regulation and vigilance.
