Diwali Celebrations and Raising of Hindu Flag on Parliament Hill in Canada
Indo-Canadian Member of Parliament Chandra Arya hosted Diwali celebrations on Parliament Hill, raising a Hindu flag with the sacred symbol ‘aum.’ The event, which brought together prominent members of the Indian diaspora, coincided with the Hindu Heritage Month in Canada, acknowledging the contributions of the Hindu community.
Supported by 67 Hindu and Indo-Canadian organizations, attendees from various regions in Canada participated in the celebrations. Arya, a Liberal Party MP, has been an advocate against hate crimes targeting Hindus and criticized recent attacks on temples and Indian installations by Khalistan supporters, despite diplomatic tensions between India and Canada.
Hinduism is the third-largest religion in Canada, followed by approximately 2.3% of the population. Arya initiated a private members motion to establish November as Hindu Heritage Month, which was unanimously passed in the House of Commons last year.
