Desilting Initiative Commences at Pulicat Lake Estuary for Environmental and Economic Benefits
The Water Resources Department (WRD) has initiated desilting work at the estuary of Pulicat Lake, the second-largest brackish waterbody in India, spanning Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Aimed at ensuring smooth tidal exchange and improving the livelihoods of local fishermen, the project involves removing sand deposits in the estuary to mitigate flooding in surrounding villages.
Tiruvallur District Collector T. Prabhushankar and officials conducted an inspection, outlining plans for a 3.5-meter depth desilting at two spots based on community input. The project’s temporary measures will create open mouths in specific locations, aiding flood prevention during the rainy season.
While this initiative addresses immediate concerns, a larger ₹26-crore project by the Fisheries department awaits clearance for a training wall at Pulicat Lake to secure permanent solutions for the region’s environmental and economic well-being. The desilting efforts are expected to benefit not only the fishing communities but also farmers along the Araniar river in adjacent areas.
