Denmark Extends Abortion Limit, Emphasizing Women’s Rights

Denmark has taken a significant step to liberalize its abortion laws, extending the legal limit for the procedure from the 12th to the 18th week of pregnancy. This decision, scheduled to come into effect on June 1, 2025, also allows girls between the ages of 15 and 17 to undergo abortions without parental consent. The move is hailed as a historic day for women’s equality by Marie Bjerre, the gender equality minister, who emphasized the importance of individual women’s freedom and rights.

The decision reflects Denmark’s commitment to strengthening women’s rights at a time when they are under threat in many parts of the world. Despite opposition from some quarters, the Danish government, along with left-leaning and center parties, has reached a consensus on this progressive reform.
