Delhi Police Accuses Umar Khalid of Spreading False Narrative on Social Media
In the ongoing bail plea hearing for former JNU student Umar Khalid in the 2020 Delhi riots case, the Delhi Police asserted that Khalid significantly contributed to amplifying a false narrative through social media. Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad presented evidence suggesting that Khalid utilized his mobile phone to communicate with various individuals, including actors, politicians, activists, and celebrities, urging them to share specific news articles and links that favored his narrative against the Delhi Police. Prasad emphasized Khalid’s efforts to influence public opinion by leveraging the social media following of these individuals as part of a larger conspiracy.
Additionally, the prosecution played a video clip of Khalid’s father expressing distrust in the Supreme Court, suggesting a deliberate attempt to shape public perception in Khalid’s favor. The prosecutor highlighted Khalid’s coordination with a WhatsApp group to organize protests following specific court proceedings, indicating a calculated strategy to advance his narrative. Prasad also rebuffed Khalid’s plea for parity with other co-accused who were granted bail, maintaining that Khalid’s actions warranted a different judicial consideration. The court has scheduled further proceedings for April 10 to allow rebuttal by Khalid’s defense counsel.
