Deadly Blast Near Pakistan Candidate’s Office Raises Security Concerns Ahead of Election
A deadly blast near an election candidate’s office in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has left 12 people dead, raising security concerns just one day before the country’s elections. The attack, which occurred at the office of an independent election candidate, comes amidst a backdrop of rising militant activity in recent months and the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Security measures at polling booths have been heightened in response to the attack.
While the perpetrators behind the blast remain unclear, various groups, including Islamist militants and Baloch separatists, have been active in the region, opposing the Pakistani state. The explosion resulted in numerous injuries, with more than two dozen reported by Khanzai hospital. As political parties concluded their campaigns, tensions remained high, particularly with Khan urging his supporters to remain vigilant at polling booths.
Meanwhile, other parties, including Nawaz Sharif’s and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party, wrapped up their campaigns amidst fervent rallies and calls for support from the electorate. Despite security concerns, Pakistan prepares for a crucial election day amid a charged political atmosphere.
