The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is set to conduct a mobility survey in households across Greater Chennai Corporation and other local bodies within the Chennai Metropolitan Area, covering 5,904 sq. km. In a groundbreaking move for India, this survey will incorporate Google big data to enhance its accuracy.
The exercise aims to collect precise data concerning various transportation priorities in Chennai and will include data from 200 traffic-affected zones. Google’s data, derived from mobile sources, will provide insights into travel patterns, peak traffic hours, and more, all without individual details. This initiative marks India’s first use of big data for mobility, allowing for data correlation with findings from the household survey.
The information gathered will inform critical decisions regarding the third phase of the Metro Rail, new bus depots, terminals, light rail transit, and railway lines, and will also be used by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority in its Third Master Plan. This pioneering effort emphasizes the importance of accurate data for effective urban planning.
