CSIR-NIIST Partners with Aquagri Processing for Innovative Biodegradable Solutions
The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) has allied with Aquagri Processing Pvt. Ltd. to transfer technology for producing multi-use biodegradable tableware and plant leather from seaweed and chitosan. This collaboration, marked by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) exchange between Dr. C. Anandharamakrishnan, Director of CSIR-NIIST, and Tanmaye Seth, Director of Aquagri Processing, signifies a fusion of technological prowess, seaweed cultivation expertise, and agricultural distribution networks.
Dr. Anandharamakrishnan highlights the potential of leveraging India’s expansive coastline and marine resources to boost rural incomes and mitigate biomass pollution. Spearheaded by scientist Dr. Anjineyulu Kothakota, the technology offers an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastics, promoting sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint.
Aquagri Processing intends to establish a pilot production facility in Tamil Nadu to manufacture vegan leather from seaweed, chitosan, and carrageenan, catering to the growing demand for environmentally conscious solutions in the leather industry. This initiative not only provides consumers with plastic-free tableware options but also fosters environmental stewardship and economic development in coastal regions.
