Crackdown on Unhygienic Practices at Chennai’s Pani Puri Shops

In response to findings of carcinogenic chemicals in pani puri samples by Karnataka’s Food Safety Department, Chennai officials have raided 58 pani puri shops and carts, including those on Marina Beach, uncovering widespread unhygienic practices.

Dr. P. Satheesh Kumar’s raids highlighted improper food handling, such as vendors not wearing gloves and using bare hands to break puris and dip into sauces. Samples of masala and sauces were collected for testing. With plans to inspect over 700 shops within days, the Food Safety Department aims to improve standards through targeted training sessions for vendors across the city.
