Crackdown on Unauthorized Breast Milk Distribution in Chennai
In a significant operation, Tamil Nadu’s Food Safety Department raided R.K. Pharma Distributors in Arumbakkam, uncovering 380 bottles and 900 sachets of pasteurised breast milk worth ₹7.87 lakh. This follows a similar seizure in Madhavaram, highlighting a growing concern over the unauthorized commercialisation of human milk.
Led by Dr. P. Satheesh Kumar, the team confiscated milk products supplied primarily to hospitals and retailers from a Karnataka-based source. The seized items, sold at prices ranging from ₹900 to ₹1,239 per bottle and ₹164 to ₹318 per sachet, are now under laboratory analysis. This raid aligns with the FSSAI’s advisory against the sale of human milk, emphasizing strict enforcement and suspension of licenses for violators to safeguard public health.
