Crackdown on Illegal Women’s Hostels in Chennai Imminent
Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the Collectorate, and the Social Welfare Department are set to identify and take action against illegal women’s hostels in Chennai. An estimated 1,000 hostels have applied for registration with the district administration. The crackdown on these unregistered facilities aims to enhance the safety of women living in these hostels.
GCC has begun requiring stability, sanitation, and fire safety certificates from these hostels, with teams from the Chennai Collector’s office slated to conduct inspections. Sholinganallur, Velachery, and Anna Nagar are areas with the highest concentration of these hostels. Over 5 lakh women in Chennai, including employees and students, require accommodation, according to hostel representatives.
