Crackdown on Illegal Bird Trade in Kanpur After Viral Video

Following the viral video of poaching migratory birds, authorities in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, conducted a raid in the Baqargunj market, rescuing 716 birds of 16 species that were up for sale. A dozen individuals were taken into custody during the operation.

Two individuals previously arrested for hunting Siberian birds were produced before the remand magistrate and sent to jail, while two minors involved in the incident were presented before the juvenile justice board and sent to a juvenile home. The forest department plans to register an FIR in the case, as the sale of the protected birds is illegal under wildlife protection rules. The rescued birds have been sent to Kanpur Zoo.
