Conviction of Riyas Aboobacker in ISIS Recruitment Case

Riyas Aboobacker, an alleged ISIS activist, has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1.25 lakh by a Special Court for the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The court found Aboobacker guilty under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code for his involvement in recruiting youth for the proscribed organization ISIS and planning explosive attacks in Kerala.

Mini S. Das, the special judge, handed down the sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses against society. Despite arguments from the NIA for maximum punishment, the court ordered that all sentences run concurrently, taking into account Aboobacker’s time served in jail over the past five years. This verdict underscores the gravity of terrorist activities and the stringent measures taken to combat them within the legal framework.
