Confusion Over Biometric Data Collection for LPG Consumers

State-run oil marketing companies in Tamil Nadu are seeking biometric details, fingerprints, or retinal scans from over 2.33 crore domestic LPG consumers, leading to confusion among consumers. Many, especially senior citizens and persons with disabilities, find it difficult to provide these details, questioning the need for such an exercise when agencies already have their Aadhaar details.

With deadlines approaching, consumers are worried about their LPG supply being affected if they fail to provide biometric data. However, some consumers, like the elderly and those with disabilities, are facing challenges in traveling to the agencies’ offices to provide these details. Consumer activists criticize the move, arguing that the collection of biometric data was initially meant for PM Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries and has now been extended to all customers without a clear rationale.
