Comprehensive Dog Population Management Initiative in Chennai

In response to escalating dog bite incidents, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has partnered with Worldwide Veterinary Service India and the Tamil Nadu State Animal Welfare Board to launch an extensive Dog Population Management (DPM) survey. Aiming to map urban canine demographics, the project includes volunteer training on DPM methodologies and systematic free-roaming dog sightings.

With a ₹5 lakh budget for logistics and training, the initiative will evaluate neutering coverage, dog abundance, and health conditions. Enhanced public health and safety, reduced zoonotic disease risks, and improved dog welfare are key success metrics. The recent rabies vaccination camp, which immunized 150 dogs, underscores GCC’s commitment to mitigating human-animal conflicts.
