Coconut Farmers in Karnataka Struggle Amidst Drought and Falling Copra Prices

Coconut farmers in Karnataka are facing a double whammy due to the prevailing drought and falling copra prices. The delay in copra procurement by NAFED, compounded by the drought-induced water scarcity, has led to significant losses for farmers in Tumakuru and Chitradurga districts. The extreme heat has reduced copra weight, affecting farmers’ incomes.

Additionally, the drying up of borewells has forced farmers to purchase water to save their plantations. Despite efforts to address the issue, including delayed procurement and low support prices, farmers are struggling to cope with the challenges posed by the drought and falling copra prices.
