CMRL’s Preventive Measures Against Flooding During Phase II Project
In anticipation of the upcoming northeast monsoon, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has developed a comprehensive plan to prevent flooding caused by the ongoing phase II project work throughout the city. The extensive 116-km phase II project spans from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur.
CMRL officials have outlined a robust strategy to ensure that project activities do not contribute to flooding or worsen waterlogging during heavy rains. While flood mitigation measures apply to both elevated and underground segments, particular attention is focused on areas containing underground stations and short tunnel stretches. Contractors have equipped themselves with multiple pumps on standby to swiftly address floodwater issues.
In cases involving underground stations, stagnant water will be effectively removed and channeled through pipelines to nearby storm-water drains, canals, or water bodies. For instance, in Panagal Park, CMRL has constructed a 1.4-lakh liter sump and installed two 100 HP pumps to divert water from the site and its surroundings to a nearby waterbody. CMRL has also collaborated with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to conduct joint inspections and identify vulnerable spots in various zones. While elevated stretches might not pose significant problems, areas where storm-water drains had to be demolished for construction purposes have seen CMRL reconstructing drains or implementing alternative drainage solutions in collaboration with the GCC.
