Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) has announced plans to procure an additional 70 three-coach driverless trains for its Phase II project. This project, with a total cost of ₹61,843 crore, will cover 116 km across three corridors in Chennai.
The corridors include Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5). CMRL has invited bids for the 70 three-coach trains, and the contract is expected to be awarded within the next 4-6 months, as per CMRL officials. This procurement will bring the total number of driverless trains for the Phase II project to 138.
