The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is addressing congestion issues in Mamallapuram by planning the construction of a new bus terminus on the East Coast Road (ECR). The CMDA has initiated a tender for this project and aims to finalize a contractor by November. The current bus terminus in Mamallapuram is located in a congested area, despite the town being a popular tourist destination. The new bus terminus, to be built on 6.79 acres with a total outlay of ₹67 crore, will offer modern amenities for a more pleasant travel experience.
It will comprise a two-story structure with a basement for two-wheeler and car parking, ground-floor shops, ticket counters, and waiting rooms, and a first floor with office spaces, dormitories, crew rest areas, and a control room. The design is inspired by the iconic Shore temple, and it will have bus bays for 50 buses. The basement parking area will accommodate 350 two-wheelers and 200 cars. Construction is expected to be completed within 14 months. The relocation of the bus terminus is expected to decongest the town and protect local monuments from noise and pollution.
