CMDA Commits to Universal Accessibility in Chennai Bus Termini
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has unveiled plans to ensure barrier-free access for persons with disabilities in all bus terminals within its jurisdiction. Following international guidelines outlined in the ‘Harmonised Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility,’ CMDA has directed officials to incorporate access facilities in both existing and upcoming bus terminals. The initiative includes conducting access audits for all public infrastructure facilities and engaging impanelled agencies for assessments.
Despite pending litigation and ongoing audits, CMDA is committed to rectifying accessibility issues, as demonstrated by its engagement with private agencies to prepare independent reports and incorporate necessary modifications. The agency aims to set a benchmark for creating universally accessible facilities, with plans to incorporate harmonized guidelines in existing termini and engage private agencies for necessary modifications.
